Malawi President Chakwera declares Southern Malawi State of disaster, appeals for Aid from local and international partners.

The Malawian President His Excellency Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera declares southern region of Malawi a state of disaster following the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy which has claimed over 200 lives so far, as more lives are still missing.

In a government’s press statement, the President, Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, “has noted with grave concern the devastation that Cyclone Freddy is currently bringing to most districts in Malawi’s Southern region,”

“Accordingly, government is already responding to the emergencies, rendering urgent assistance to all affected districts, and appealing for local and international support for all the families affected by this disaster,”

Apart from the loss of many lives, the Cyclone has wiped away many houses, livestock, infrastructure like bridges roads and electricity poles.

So far, thousands of destitute citizens are being kept in classrooms as temporary shelter while government is looking for alternative solutions for them.

The deadly Freddy, which appears to have become as the longest-lasting tropical cyclone ever and was first named on Feb. 6, has also brought heavy rains and havoc for nonstop period of one week leaving thousands of people destitute.
