Every year on May 25th, the African Union (AU) and people across the continent celebrate Africa Day. This special day marks the anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, which later became the African Union in 2002. Africa Day is a time to honor African unity, progress, and the shared dreams of the continent’s people.
In 2025, the African Union continues to use Africa Day to reflect on the journey of African nations and to look ahead with hope. This year’s theme focuses on youth empowerment and innovation, recognizing the power of young Africans to shape a brighter future through education, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Celebrations take place in various forms across the continent. In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—home of the AU headquarters—leaders gather for speeches, cultural performances, and discussions on key issues such as peace, development, and climate action. In many countries, schools, communities, and organizations host events to showcase African music, dance, food, and fashion. Here in Egypt, the Dean of African Ambassadors organized three days for the celebrations which started on 23 with football match between Africa embassy employees and other African nationals leaving in Egypt. On 24 the celebrations were marked with traditional foods, cultural dances and exhibition of artifacts. On 25th the celebrations will host dinner with VIP Treatment. The Malawi Embassy in Cairo led by Her Excellency Ambassador Catherine Kunje in collaboration with Malawian students pursuing their studies in various Universities made part of the celebrations. They showcased Malawi dishes such as Nsima with Therere, mandasi ,zitumbuwa , exhibited Malawi curios and presented a documentary that contain the government strategy of Agriculture, Tourism and Mining (ATM) from the Malawi 2063 Agenda.
The African Union also uses Africa Day to call for deeper integration and cooperation among member states. It encourages African citizens to embrace the values of unity, peace, and self-reliance, reminding everyone of the vision of a strong, prosperous, and peaceful Africa.
Africa Day is not just a celebration—it is a reminder of Africa’s potential and the importance of working together to build a better future for all.
Happy Africa Day!
